| 英文簡介 | CHANG Yueh-E (1927-2020) is a specialist in Taiwanese Opera and a music educationist. She was born in Zuihou Township at Kiirun County of Taihoku Prefecture (now known as Ruifang District of New Taipei City) as a music lover since a very young age. She was admitted to Taihoku Prefectural Ranyou Girls' High School (now known as National Lan-Yang Girls' Senior High School) in 1940 and learned music from her teacher Oda, whose teaching influenced her music career for the rest of her life. After graduating from high school, she first taught in Shoukei National School (now known as Jiaoxi Elementary School) and formed a marching band there in the 1950s. In 1968, when she was teaching in Jiaoxi Junior High School, she founded a Chinese Orchestra there, which later became a constant winner in regional and national music contests. As she retired and attended workshops on Taiwanese Opera to broaden her knowledge of Pún-tē Kua-á (aka Local Taiwanese Opera, the most ancient form of Taiwanese Opera) in Yilan, she made up her mind to go further in its research. Her essay “Research and Exploration on the Music of Pún-tē Kua-á is regarded as a significant work on the studies of Pún-tē Kua-á, while her transcriptions of the ancient tunes of Pún-tē Kua-á were also recorded in books on Taiwanese Opera such as Chen Wang-Tsung: A Theatrical Life. She won the 3rd Kavalan Award in 1996 and Yilan Culture Award in 2017, thus becoming the only female winner of both these 2 major awards in Yilan. Honored as “The Mother of Chinese Music” in Yilan, Chang Yueh-E passed away in 2020 and was awarded a posthumous presidential citation for her lifelong contributions to the traditional performance arts in Yilan. |
